One of the goals we’ve felt impressed to work on this year are our 72-hour kits. I wouldn’t say we’re extreme survivalists or anything, but you never know if a tornado will show up, an earthquake will shake the house, a flood, a mudslide, a freakish inland hurricane, the zombie apocalypse or alien invasion will occur. Better safe than sorry.

We gathered up a few spare backpacks and packed a few essentials to get us through a few days of tragedy. So far, our bags include:

  • Change of clothes (one/person, including socks and underwear)
  • Blanket (one/person)
  • Food and snacks (I think we’ll probably expand our food supply when we get larger bags…)
  • Water
  • Multipurpose tool
  • Cordage
  • First Aid Kits (they’re on their way!)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste (also on their way!)
  • Crayons and notebook (gotta keep kids sane)
  • Toy (one/child)
  • Matches (waterproof, strike anywhere)
  • Lantern and Batteries
  • Medication (just generic stuff for pain relief, allergies, etc)
  • Diapers and Wipes
  • Dog food and leash

Jack asked the girls what they would grab if they only had five minutes to leave the house. Claire grabbed her rocking horse and Evelyn stuffed her arms full of toys. Now they know they can just grab their 72-hour pack and scoot out the door!
If an emergency occurs, we even practiced where the bags are stashed and dragging them out to the car. Have you packed a 72-hour kit in case of emergency? What did you put in it?
