Of all the fruits and vegetables I wanted to plant in our garden this spring, watermelon was high on the list.  It is such a nostalgic food and embodies a taste of summer.

I’m new to Indiana soil (and how much clay it has!) so though we had several watermelons, they were pint sized compared to the huge melons sold at the store.

It didn’t affect the taste at all–they were still juicy and sweet.  Claire ate hers with her eyes half shut, afraid she’d get squirt in the eyes.

I’m already planning ahead for next year and am hoping to sprout my own watermelon from seeds, among other plants.  The garden is winding down but we sure feel blessed by the bounty we’ve received the last few months.
