More than once my mom has tried to convince me to buy a cheap gold band to wear around when I’m doing my chores or working on the house.  It’s probably  not a bad idea but whenever I have spare money, I diliberate between a ring or a hair cut or a new pair of jeans and a replacement window, a gallon of paint or a room full of drywall.  The building supplies almost always win out.

That means that my poor ring is often filthy and grimy at the end of the day.  Fortunately there’s an easy solution: homemade jewelry cleaner!

Ingredients:

1/3 cup water
1/3 cup ammonia
1/3 cup Joy dish soap

Combine all three ingredients (make sure you’ve got adequate ventilation–that ammonia can be pretty strong initially).  Drop your gold and diamonds in and let them soak for a few minutes.

Use an old toothbrush and some warm water to scrub and rinse your jewels clean.

Stand back and admire the squeaky-clean sparkle!
